I would like you to take a look at this picture:

This is you standing in a street.
I can safely say to you that if I, Patrick Taylor, was walking down this same street I would neither “pass by” nor “pass you by”.
What I would do is “pass by you”.
But I wouldn’t get very far.
I would crash into and fall over the plant stand behind you.
And once I squared up with the shopkeeper and paid for the plants that I broke, I would find you and talk to you.
That’s the effect you have on me.
